Why Are You HPC?

In the world of high-performance computing (HPC), I identify as a participant, albeit not in the role of a back-end creator, but I passionately identify with the HPC community and its transformative impact on our daily lives. My passion for the field extends beyond my role as a communicator. Serving as the SC23 Communication Chair, I take great pride in showcasing pioneering leaders and their work, bridging the gap between cutting-edge HPC innovations and their practical applications while fostering collaboration among diverse institutions around the globe.

Since 2016, my commitment to the SC community’s mission has driven me to advocate for its cause. I’ve worked diligently to engage students, spreading awareness and creating a vibrant network within the HPC community. This journey has been deeply fulfilling, enabling me to empower the next generation of HPC enthusiasts and connecting brilliant minds and the broader world through outreach and communication endeavors.

My enthusiasm for HPC goes beyond my role. It stems from the practical benefits I’ve experienced. Back in 2005 when I founded my school in Brest, France, educational materials and curriculum development were arduous tasks. The tools available then were limited, demanding a high level of expertise. Today, HPC has made this process accessible, streamlining content creation, translation and interpretation. I vividly recall the early days of Google Translate and its humorous literal translations. Fortunately, it has come a long way, improving efficiency in tasks that once took hours.

On a personal note, I’m deeply thankful for HPC’s contributions to the medical field, which have been instrumental in developing vaccines and advanced medical equipment that ensure the health and safety of both myself and my loved ones.In essence, I may not be a back-end HPC creator, but I am a passionate HPC advocate, communicator and user. I am HPC.

For the better part of a decade, I have been steadily more immersed in science, particularly in areas of computational/computer science, data science and applied mathematics. Of late, research areas involving exascale/high-performance computing, large-scale workflows, artificial intelligence/machine learning and quantum computing have permeated that core mix.

Yet, unlike many who build and use these technologies for seeking solutions to Grand Challenge problems, I am the interested spectator. Better still, I get to be the storyteller, taking in all the innovations, achievements and personalities that make these unique mechanisms so elemental in modern research and detailing the ways they can benefit society.

Actually, that is my job: communicating the science of computing done by the talented scientists and researchers within the Computational Science Initiative at the Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory. I am a part of a gifted team that draws on all of my skills and entrusts me to tell their highly varied, sometimes vastly technical, stories. At times, I can be an editor, reporter, advisor or even a collaborator. Most importantly (to me), among these computing and technical professionals, I am an equal. Whether attending a project meeting, touring a data center or volunteering at the SC Conference, I am welcome, and my contributions are respected and valued.

Why Are You HPC?

Science has always been utterly fascinating to me. Throughout my youth and early career, I found myself gravitating toward stories about humans probing the mystery of the natural world. Early on, I noticed that just about every scientific story of significance eventually relied on computing.

In 2020, at the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself acting as Editor in Chief of Science Node. This publication focused on bringing academic HPC news to average readers—people who love science but lack advanced degrees or decades of experience. The challenge was that HPC is a complex field that can be difficult to explain to the layperson, but this was made easier by the fact that I could find stories from every imaginable scientific discipline that at some point relied on HPC.

While at Science Node, I covered the use of HPC in everything from climate science to human rights violations. I even got a chance to talk to some of the people directing HPC resources toward drug discovery for the COVID-19 vaccine. When you stop and actually think about it, the magnitude of HPC’s impact on the scientific community is nearly beyond comprehension.

Humans are tool builders, and I don’t think it’s an overstatement to say that computers are among the most valuable tools that humanity has ever created. That’s why I work so hard to communicate the work HPC scientists do and help ensure they get the funding they need. That’s why I feel so much respect and admiration for the people who dedicate their lives to mastering this complex and intricate technology.

That’s why I am HPC.

Why Are You HPC?

My journey into the world of HPC began not as a developer or a scientist but as a communicator—a “comms” specialist with a deep interest in advanced technology and its many applications and utilities for making our lives better. From my very first SC Conference in 2000 in Dallas, Texas, I was entranced by the sheer scale and impact of supercomputing, especially its capability to transform society at large. Since then, I’ve committed myself to amplifying the achievements and nuances of this awe-inspiring community through diverse roles in media and marketing.

OmniScale Media, the agency I co-founded, is a testament to my passion for democratizing advanced technologies like HPC and AI. Our mission is to serve technology communities by bridging the gap between groundbreaking innovations and the betterment of society. This sense of purpose has been both professionally fulfilling and personally rewarding. We are grateful to play a role as we watch our clients pioneer solutions that are not only disruptive but also deeply impactful.

A key career highlight has been the opportunity to work alongside brilliant minds in the industry, promoting not just their technological advancements but also the human stories behind them. Each story serves as a building block in a larger narrative that underscores the transformative power of HPC. For example, our work in highlighting the role of HPC technologies and applications in Alzheimer’s disease research, large language modeling, or even national security applications serves as a constant reminder of what humanity can achieve with the right tools and intellectual resources.

So, am I a coder? No. A data scientist? Far from it. But what I am is an evangelist for a technological revolution that promises to redefine the boundaries of human capability and progress.

And, that’s why I am HPC.

In the early 1980s, I was at Colorado State University (CSU). I went to a few classes and did a book report. They gave me a Ph.D. and a faculty position. It was very nice of them. While I was wrapping up my degree, CSU brought in a Cyber-205. CSU was the first American university with a supercomputer (although Purdue claims this as well). I got side-tracked into HPC, and I never got back to water resources engineering (whatever that is).

I worked at a collection of universities with HPC systems. Not that I couldn’t keep a job, but universities got new National Science Foundation grants, and I relocated to help start up the centers. I mostly led the user support groups.

For me, it has been a great career. I have been able to play with the most expensive toys, and I helped researchers use these systems to tackle the most challenging science problems.

I am HPC, and HPC is, indeed, an important part of me.

Q: What single event most made you realize you wanted a career in HPC/computing?

Penchoff: While in graduate school, I was working on a project focused on optimization of separations of REEs and actinides. This was critical to guarantee a national supply of REEs and to develop strategies to bind actinides for applications in national security. Throughout this project, I realized the power of HPC resources and how they could accelerate solution development for these applications. Since then, I have been passionate about developing strategies to connect HPC with research areas that can benefit from HPC’s accelerating capabilities.

Q: What do you consider your biggest contribution to the HPC/computing community?

Penchoff: I think my biggest contribution so far has been to develop protocols to facilitate HPC-driven tools to address needs in radiochemistry.I think my biggest contribution so far has been to develop protocols to facilitate HPC-driven tools to address needs in radiochemistry.

Q: In the past 35 years, what is the most significant overlooked breakthrough that has impacted the field in your eyes?

Penchoff: I have been in this field for a little bit over a decade. I can’t say at this point what may be an overlooked breakthrough from the past 35 years. I certainly look forward to future multidisciplinary advances in the field.

Q: What would you like to see change about, within, or among the HPC/computing community?

Penchoff: I would like computer scientists and domain scientists to see themselves as part of a large team striving to develop solutions for needs critical in society with local, regional, national, and global scope. Historically, fields developed in defined areas of research, and great advances have been achieved thanks to efforts in each community. Moving forward, I would like for scientists to be part of a larger team with less defined boundaries to create an environment in which everyone can feel that they belong. This would allow everyone to contribute their best efforts to develop solutions that require multidisciplinary expertise.

Q: What single event most made you realize you wanted a career in HPC/computing?

Harrell: I came from an IT/Systems Administration background in industry. I got hooked when I started an academic job 15 years ago and realized I could make more of an impact in the world supporting science. I have been supporting science and engineering in academia ever since.

Q: What do you consider your biggest contribution to the HPC/computing community?

Harrell: I have contributed in small ways many, many times. I think, in general, my contribution is helping scientists learn about our world. I do some computer science research as well, but there is nothing more satisfying for me than supporting new discoveries about our world, our universe, and us.

Q: What would you like to see change about, within, or among the HPC/computing community?

Harrell: I would like to see the different organizations that push HPC forward start to share their own technology, as well as building on others’ work. There is often a push to do something “new” when a good amount of the ideas [generated] in the project-in-planning are implemented somewhere else. We need to reuse this work and collaborate across programs, institutions, agencies, and countries.

It is often more fun to reinvent the wheel. However, we only need so many kinds of wheels. What actually is needed are carts with wheels that anyone can replace.

SC23 Technical Program Co-Chair Rosa M. Badia is a trailblazing researcher whose impressive career has run in parallel to her involvement with the SC Conference.

With an impressive career spanning over 15 years, Dr. Rosa M. Badia, manager of the Workflows and Distributed Computing group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), has garnered recognition as a trailblazing researcher in parallel programming models for multicore and distributed computing, particularly for her contributions to task-based programming models. Badia’s expertise extends to PyCOMPSs/COMPSs, a parallel task-based programming model designed for distributed computing, used to develop complex, heterogeneous workflows that seamlessly integrate high-performance computing, big data, and machine learning.

Badia has been recognized with the Euro-Par Achievement Award in 2019, noting her work on parallel task-based programming models, workflow applications, and systems; the Dona TIC Award 2019 (Academia/Researcher category); and the International Symposium on High-Performance Parallel and Distributed Computing (HPDC) Achievement Award in 2021. In 2023, she was invited to become a member of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans, a private academic, scientific, and cultural institution dedicated to researching Catalan culture, further solidifying her status as a distinguished academic in her field.

As a longtime SC Conference participant, Badia has held diverse roles, including as an exhibitor, tutorial presenter, panelist, workshop organizer, invited speaker, poster author, and Birds of a Feather session organizer. She also has contributed her share of technical papers as both an author and presenter. For SC23, Badia took an even bigger leap by serving as Co-Chair (with Kathryn Mohror of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) of the Technical Program.

Researcher & Volunteer in Parallel

Notably, Badia’s substantial involvement with the SC Conference happens to coincide with her decision to pursue computing as a career. In her I AM HPC profile, Badia shares some of her journey thus far and where she still would like to see the computing research community evolve.

Q: What single event most made you realize you wanted a career in HPC/computing?

Badia: One event significantly impacted me and made me want to belong and contribute more to the HPC community. I was already contributing to the European Center of Parallelism in Barcelona (CEPBA), the precursor of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. At that time, I had the opportunity to attend SC02 in Baltimore—my first SC! I enjoyed the event so much and was so excited about the Technical Program, the Exhibits, and all the components of SC that when I left, I told myself I wanted to be more involved with this community.

Q: What do you consider your biggest contribution to the HPC/computing community?

Badia: During the last 15 years, I have done research on task-based programming models for different target platforms: multicore processors, GPUs, and distributed computing. For example, in SC06, we presented a paper about CellSs, a task-based programming model for the Cell processor. Also, from BSC, we proposed the tasking model, which has been adopted in the OpenMP specification. My recent research focuses more on distributed computing through the PyCOMPSs/COMPSs programming environment and on the development of workflows that combine traditional HPC simulations with artificial intelligence and data analytics.

Q: In the past 35 years, what is the most significant overlooked breakthrough that has impacted the field in your eyes?

Badia: I am not sure I can identify any overlooked breakthrough. However, multiple innovations have impacted the field in recent years. To mention a few, the appearance of the multicore chips posed large challenges on how applications should be programmed or the heterogeneous architectures (mainly GPUs but also FPGAs). More recently, artificial intelligence has been changing the field a lot and is opening a considerable controversy regarding its impact on traditional modeling and simulation.

Q: What would you like to see change about, within, or among the HPC/computing community?

Badia: Ideally, I would like [to make] more international collaboration possible. While there are initiatives that try to foster this, in the end, it isn’t easy. I see groups in different regions (United States, Europe, Asia) working on similar topics and sometimes duplicating efforts because there are no common funding instruments that enable real international collaboration. Unfortunately, it is something challenging to achieve since even regions with good political relationships have no programs allowing this collaboration. Another aspect that I will be happy to see change is gender and diversity in general. SC is doing an excellent job promoting it, but, in fact, the numbers in the institutions still show that there is a lot of work to be done.

Q: What are you most looking forward to at SC23?

Badia: For almost the last two years, I have worked with Kathryn Mohror as Co-Chairs of the SC23 Technical Program. This has involved a committee of more than 500 members in eight program components. Although this has required a great effort from all of us, we are very excited about the forthcoming SC23 and wish for a very successful event.

The challenge of providing a unique SC Conference experience for attendees is met by an international body of volunteers from diverse backgrounds including academia, research, and industry. Currently, these hundreds of volunteers are led by SC23 General Chair Dr. Dorian Arnold, whose “day job” is associate professor at Emory University, and his personally selected executive management team. Together, they have been hard at work for two years readying for SC23. The SC23 management team is composed of HPC professionals (many longtime conference volunteers) Christine Cuicchi, Philip Roth, Christine Harvey, and Stephen Lien Harell. This team supports 18 executive team members who, in turn, oversee their own teams totaling 822 volunteers to date.

Each volunteer body meets regularly according to their team’s objectives, with most meetings conducted remotely. However, building on the notion that some ideas are better hatched in person, there typically are six face-to-face meetings spread throughout the two years prior to the current year’s conference. As such, 54 volunteers and contracted professionals met in Indianapolis for the third scheduled in-person meeting in advance of SC23. During the two-day meeting the teams shared their progress, discussed needs, solved problems, and assessed their long-term objectives. This meet-up allowed everyone to align their goals and create synergies via impromptu collaboration. The volunteers worked hard during the day and enjoyed informal team-building opportunities at select Indianapolis venues in the evenings, such as dinner at The Garage Food Hall.
