These elements are critical for enablin g the execution of ORNL’s broader mission to accelerate scientific discove ries and their translation into energy, environment, and security solution s for the nation.\n\nMajor Duties/Responsibilities:\nPartner with scientif ic and technical staff in both CSMD and the Neutron Scattering Division to evaluate and optimize the software development practices of the group, an d ensure success of the project.\nParticipate in the planning and major de velopment efforts on scientific software projects for neutron techniques i n the areas of diffraction, engineering diffraction, imaging, reflectometr y, small-angle scattering, and spectroscopy.\nCollaborate on proposals rel ated to the neutron sciences, and on proposals in computing that support b etter software and infrastructure for the neutron sciences.\nCoordinate, l ead, and act as a representative of the Laboratory in international collab orations related to scattering software.\nWork closely with partners to me et their software requirements, address bugs, and achieve their scientific goals.\nAct as a mentor for project members, junior staff, post-graduates , and students to help them grow.\n\nBasic Qualifications:\nA minimum of a BS degree in computer science or physics and 3+ years of software enginee ring experience outside of degree.\nExperience with C++ and Python\nExperi ence with version control, containers, and continuous integration/continuo us deployment (CI/CD)\n\nPreferred Qualifications:\nMS or PhD preferred.\n 5+ years of experience in addition to the degree.\nExperience developing s oftware at a neutron user facility, synchrotron light source or other larg e-scale experimental physics project or user facility is preferred.\nExper ience with PyQT or PySide.\nExperience with modern software practices such as test-driven development, Agile software development practices and a fi rm, proven knowledge of software development lifecycles.\nThe ability to w ork on a team in a dynamic group environment as the team meets daily, prac tices continuous integration, collaborates on the source code and has regu lar deadlines as part of an Agile-based development process.\nActivity wit hin the broader open-source software community.\n\nCode Sample:\nAn open-s ource code sample or coding exercise used for evaluation purposes will be required later in the application process. It should be object-oriented, contain five or more classes, show a sophisticated understanding of the p roject and be your sole work to a very high degree (>95%).
