SUMMARY:NERSC HPC Department Head
DESCRIPTION:NERSC HPC Department Head - 100372\nDivision: NE-NERSC\n\nLawr
ence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) National Energy
Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) Division has an opening for a
HPC Department Head to join the team.\n\nIn this exciting role, you will
serve as the HPC (High Performance Computing) Department Head. NERSC’s mis
sion is to accelerate scientific discovery through high performance comput
ing and data analysis for the DOE Office of Science programs. NERSC provid
es critical HPC and data systems and support for NERSC’s 10,000 users rese
arching alternative energy sources, climate science, energy efficiency, en
vironmental science and other DOE mission areas. NERSC is seeking an inspi
ring leader for the HPC Department who will provide vision and guidance du
ring this time of transition to exascale architectures and beyond. \n\nTh
e HPC Department within NERSC includes the Advanced Technologies Group, Ap
plication Performance Group, Business Operations and Services Group, Progr
amming Environment and Models Group, and User Engagement Group – a depart
ment of approximately 40 technical staff members and postdocs. The HPC dep
artment is responsible for assessing emerging technologies, enabling its b
road workload on advanced architectures, providing a productive HPC develo
pment environment, business operations, HPC consulting, training, deployin
g software, and providing documentation. The department is also heavily in
volved in determining requirements for, and procuring NERSC’s supercompute
rs and other large-scale systems. The HPC Department Head is a member of t
he management team that sets strategic directions and prioritizes work acr
oss NERSC, and works closely with colleagues in the national laboratories,
leading research universities, Department of Energy and HPC communities.\
n\nWhat You Will Do:\n• Serve as a key member of NERSC’s leadership team t
o set strategic directions for NERSC and influence the direction of the HP
C industry on a large scale, nationwide basis.\n• Provide vision and strat
egic direction for the HPC Department.\n• Communicate with stakeholders wi
thin the Department of Energy Office of Science and oversee the allocation
s process.\n• Assure NERSC’s HPC systems are high performing and productiv
e platforms for NERSC users. Work with the management team to define and m
easure meaningful metrics to assess the operational effectiveness of NERSC
.\n• Provide effective line management for the department by hiring excell
ent staff and conducting performance management. Assure staff are meeting
goals and provide both positive and constructive feedback to staff and kee
p them motivated.\n• Play a key leadership role in designing and deploying
advanced technology supercomputers.\n• Work closely with other teams and
departments at NERSC to enable complex scientific workflows including simu
lation and modeling, AI and experimental data analysis.\n• Oversee the dev
elopment and implementation of a strategy to perform scalable user support
.\n• Oversee preparation for DOE and UC-sponsored program reviews, and act
as a peer reviewer for other organizations.\n• Maintain a work environmen
t that embraces diversity and fosters creativity and innovation.\n• Ensure
that DOE and Laboratory rules and policies are observed.\n\n
