HPC Turned up to eleven

SC23’s Technical Program features focused sessions, such as Birds of a Feather, an ideal platform for dialogue on trending HPC topics. True to form, we’ll be hosting a robust Panels program, allowing for insightful Q&A sessions with domain experts. Papers and Posters provide the opportunity to present groundbreaking research to the most sizable gathering of HPC minds. We’ll also have an Exhibitor Forum, where organizations can delve technically into their specialties. And precious insight into the industry and network-building activities await students and early-career attendees.

Quantum entanglement

Meanwhile, Tutorials and Workshops promise to be insightful, particularly in advancing research areas. For example, SC23 will welcome a variety of quantum computing institutions and new vendors as interest in its potential capabilities keeps increasing. Many programs also will include sessions focused on this evolving field, such as the Fourth International Workshop on Quantum Computing Software. This workshop is accepting abstracts until July 21, 2023. There’s still time to get involved!

Engage the HPC Community

As a panelist at SC23, you will have the opportunity to share your ideas and insights with some of the foremost experts in the industry. You can network with other attendees, learn about the latest advances in HPC, and make a name for yourself as a thought leader in the field. This is a chance to engage the field while we’re all under one roof, so bring your hot takes, best practices, recipes for success, common pitfalls, and of course, an appetite for discussion.

Various panels, encompassing both technical and non-technical subjects, are highly recommended. This presents a chance for individuals of all backgrounds, including experts, HPC veterans, or novices, to partake in discussions relevant to the field. The most captivating panels combine compelling and diverse opinions – so don’t hesitate to step forward and express your thoughts.

Topics can remain in a particular subdomain, or apply to HPC more broadly. Panels at SC22 did both, including “Computing at the Edge: A Discussion about Supporting Recent US Space Missions” and “Relaxing Correctness via Approximate Computing: Is It Feasible in HPC?”. Panels can be forward-looking, asking open-ended questions that propose completely novel or revolutionary approaches with technologies yet to come. They can also be reflective, addressing the most prominent challenges and pains that many in the room had no doubt experienced.

Technical topics aren’t the only ones that gather an active crowd. Popular panels from years passed span a range of topics, such as “Strategies for Working Remotely: Sustainable Hybrid Approaches for HPC” from SC21, and “Empowering STEM Women with Skills for Success: How to Offset the Paradoxical Skills Asymmetry at a Workplace” from SC22.

SC23 Panels present an opportunity to try out new ideas, share experiences, and get feedback from the prominent figures in industry, academia, national laboratories, and everywhere in between. These interactive sessions foster a collaborative environment, enabling participants to learn, grow, and further refine their ideas while expanding their professional networks. Such a broad range of topics affords us all the opportunity to reflect on all of our experiences, both technical and non-technical, as we push the field forward into new frontiers. We invite you to join the discussion by submitting a panel proposal with up to five panelists, and we look forward to the lively debate that will ensue.

Part of what makes this the premier venue for HPC research is found in the community: in 2022, over 11,000 attendees and 361 institutions representing the largest and most advanced computing centers in the world attended SC. Another ingredient that puts the “super” in the selected papers is the rigor by which research is evaluated.

Each submitted paper is directed into one of ten technical areas: Algorithms; Applications; Architecture and Networks; Clouds and Distributed Computing; Data Analytics, Visualization and Storage; Machine Learning with HPC; Performance Measurement, Modeling and Tools; Post-Moore Computing; Programming Frameworks and System Software; and State of the Practice.

SC23 will use a streamlined, single-round review-and-rebuttal process. All submitted papers will be reviewed by four or five experts in the technical area. All reviews will be double-anonymous so that reviewers do not know the papers’ authors or affiliations. Authors will have an opportunity to provide rebuttals, answering questions from the reviewers before the technical program committee meets to select papers to be accepted. The SC Conference is a leader in tangible progress towards scientific rigor, through its pioneering practice of enhanced reproducibility of accepted papers. The scientific method is the foundation of scientific research, utilized by aspiring science fair contestants and Nobel laureates alike. The successful application of the scientific method has a key feature: the result, under given conditions, is reproducible. The SC Papers program promotes this end with the Reproducibility Initiative.

Reproducibility Initiative

First, the Artifact Description and Artifact Evaluation (AD/AE) appendices enhance transparency and improve reproducibility. However, achieving reproducibility might require non-trivial effort and time investment. Therefore, to diminish its impact, it is advisable to incorporate reproducibility practices early in the experimental design phase when validating a paper. Additionally, the benefits of reproducibility extend beyond ensuring trustworthy science, as authors can also reproduce their own experiments in the future, thus enhancing their own research outcomes. All paper submitters should review the information on the Reproducibility Initiative page, including the guidelines for AD/AE Appendices & Badges. Ensuring the reproducibility of scientific results is crucial for establishing trust in scientific findings.

Reproducibility challenge

Second, the Reproducibility Challenge takes a previously accepted paper and has students in the Student Cluster Competition attempt to reproduce it. Now this is where the rubber hits the road! The students will produce publish-quality, citable reports that will be made available through an archive.
