35 Years of SC

The SC Conference Series commemorates 35 years of bringing together the top minds in High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis to share ideas, contributions, and advancements in the fields that support HPC.

This exhibit celebrates the conference series from its beginnings in 1988 in Orlando, Florida, to SC23 here in Denver and recognizes a number of “hidden figures” who have advanced the field of high performance computing in meaningful ways.

join in the celebration

Peruse the SC history panels to see highlights of each individual SC Conference, read about historically significant figures in the HPC field featured on profile panels, and interact with the CSGenome visualizations on either side of the video wall to learn more about some of the key contributors to HPC.

The 35th Anniversary Exhibit is located in Lobby F of the Colorado Convention Center.

HPC Figures of Influence Representing Hidden Groups

SC23 commemorates the 35th anniversary of the SC Conference Series with the theme I Am HPC. In keeping with this theme, we celebrate EVERYONE who has contributed to the field of HPC, whether their impacts have been great or small, technical or otherwise.

This showcase spotlights just a few of these outstanding people, focusing on those traditionally underrepresented in HPC, including women, Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and persons from other minority groups. The current set is incomplete, U.S.-centric, and is not intended to undermine the impactful contributions of many others.

CSGenome Project: A Taxonomic History of Computer System Performance

Inspired by the movie Hidden Figures1, SC23 has partnered with Virginia Tech’s CSGenome Project to identify historical figures who contributed meaningfully to HPC. The Virginia Tech team has correlated these historical hidden figures in HPC to their CSGenome Project, a database of the technology lineage and performance of historical computer systems. These historical figures were identified through a combination of diligent archive searches and open solicitations from the broader SC community. They represent just a few of the many talented individuals in HPC. Visualizations on either side of this video wall depict both the history of Women in HPC and the HPC Innovators & Contributors Network.

To nominate a hidden figure for inclusion into the project:

1 Hidden Figures. Directed by Theodore Melfi, screenplay by Theodore Melfi and Allison Schroeder, 20th Century Fox, 2016. Based loosely on the 2016 book Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Who Helped Win the Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterly.
